Famous Juju musician King Sunny Ade has vowed to keep performing his 1989 duet with Onyeka Onwenu, “Waiting for Me,” for the rest of his life as a tribute to her memory.
He made this promise during a visit to express condolences to Onwenu’s family alongside the Musical Society of Nigeria (MCSN) management.
Ade praised Onwenu as an exceptional individual who provided wise guidance.
He remembered their work together, noting that she frequently took the lead and offered suggestions, which led to wonderful music.
He said: “I will on her behalf perform ‘Waiting for Me’ throughout my life. I have done it several times in different countries, where I gave credit to her.
“When it comes to music that two people have to do together, she used to do more than I did. She would just tap me and say ‘Sunny, don’t worry, let’s take it this way, and it’s always good.”
He dismissed the rumors about a romantic relationship with Onwenu, saying they were just a publicity stunt to promote their songs together.
“It was a gimmick we allowed because of the duets we did together. Before we launched the duet I did with her, “Waiting for Me”, people used to think that she was my girl friend. But both of us never said yes or no. On the day of the unveiling of the song, they were disappointed because of what they saw”, he said.
In other news, Adele, an English singer, has opened out about her mental battle with gender and sexuality.
Despite being a straight woman, the Grammy-winning singer admits she frequently feels like “a gay man.”
Addressing the audience at her recent sold-out show in Munich, Germany, the 36-year-old said she feels “trapped.”
She went on: “I often think I’m a gay man trapped in a straight woman’s body.”
Adele recently declared in an interview with German broadcaster ZDF that she would be taking a break from music to pursue new creative endeavors after the final leg of her current tour in November.
