Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, has characterized her suspension from the Senate as unjust and has pledged to persist in her service to her constituents despite this decision.
The Senate imposed the suspension on Akpoti-Uduaghan for “gross misconduct” following a contentious exchange with Senate President Godswill Akpabio regarding seating arrangements on February 20. The situation intensified when Akpoti-Uduaghan subsequently accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim he has refuted.
The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions dismissed her petition concerning the matter on procedural grounds.
In a statement on social media, Akpoti-Uduaghan criticized her suspension, labeling it an affront to justice and fairness.
“Against the culture of silence, intimidation and victim-shaming; my unjust suspension from the Nigerian Senate invalidates the principles of natural justice, fairness and equity,” she stated.
She reiterated her dedication to her responsibilities, asserting that the suspension does not diminish her legitimacy as an elected representative.
“The illegal suspension does not withdraw my legitimacy as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and I will continue to use my duly elected position to serve my constituents and country to the best of my ability till 2027… and beyond,” she added.
Despite her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan remains resolute, asserting that she will not be silenced.
