“I’m a feminist but I don’t support a woman disrespecting her husband” - Funke Akindele

Nigerian actress, filmmaker, and producer Funke Akindele has identified herself as a proponent of feminism.

However, she was quick to clarify that she does not support or endorse women being disrespectful to their husbands under the pretext of feminism.

In a video addressing skit creator Kamo State and his spouse, the filmmaker asserted her rejection of the idea that women are the “weaker sex,” highlighting that they are “strong and bold.”

She encouraged men to treat women with special regard and to avoid limiting them to traditional roles, such as those confined to the kitchen. Funke Akindele also emphasized the significance of women’s economic empowerment, advising them to achieve financial independence to better support their husbands.

She said:

“I’m a feminist but I do not support a woman disrespecting her husband. Do what is right.

“I believe that we are not the weaker sex or vessel. Men are suppose to treat us specially and respect us. Men should not also feel that a woman belongs to the kitchen and can be talked to anyhow.

“We women are strong, and bold. Also, our economic power is important that is why we should make sure we have the power and protect it so we can support our husbands.”

Who is a feminist?

A feminist is someone who supports feminism, which is the belief in and advocacy for gender equality, particularly in terms of women’s rights and opportunities. Feminists work toward addressing and challenging social, cultural, and political inequalities faced by women and marginalized genders. Feminism isn’t just about advocating for women but also about striving for fairness and equal treatment for everyone, regardless of gender.

Feminists can be from any background, and their activism can take many forms, ranging from advocating for equal pay and reproductive rights to challenging gender-based violence and discrimination. The movement has evolved over time, but its core aim remains the same: achieving gender justice.
