A video circulating online shows Nigerian athlete Favour Ofili breaking down in tears after coming sixth in the women’s 200-meter final at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Ofili, who is 21 years old, was qualified for the women’s 200-meter final after coming first in the heats and second in the quarterfinal behind Julien Alfred.

On August 5, Ofili wowed with a season-best time of 22.05 seconds, finishing second and raising expectations for a podium spot.

She did, however, lose to Gabby Thomas of the United States in the final, clocking 22.24 seconds and therefore eliminating her dreams of winning an Olympic gold. Gabrielle Thomas of the United States won gold in an incredible 21.83 seconds, followed by Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia in silver and Brittany Brown of the United States in bronze.

@osaro_erto said, “They did her dirty..she was the fastest 2nd qualifier and Semi final and 3rd fastest qualifier for final and then they decided to put her in a difficult lane (9). Nobody was there to contest it for her, she really struggled and put in her best. She worth a medal but the whole politics even amongst the Olympics officials made her break down and then Nigeria sports officials too… Imagine people you normally beat come 3rd, 4th and 5th because of the lane they got. We are proud of you favour, you gave it your all 💪🏽🔥❤️💫”.
