Six security guards, among them an Inspector, were detained by the Imo State Police Command for extorting motorists.
Three NDLEA agents, Kelechi Chijoke, 30, David Nwaji, and Ikechukwu Nwaka, each 28 years old, are among the suspects. Police Inspector Odidika Augustine, 37, is another suspect.
Israel Obijiaku, 28, and Timothy Omodi, 33, both members of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), are additional members.
In a statement on Tuesday, Henry Okoye, spokesman for the Imo State Police Command, claimed that the operatives had used Point of Sale (PoS) terminals to steal money from young people and had illegally seized and checked their mobile phones while operating under the cover of Operation Search Flush in the state.
The rebellious agents, in Okoye’s opinion, inflicted their victims with unimaginable suffering.
According to Gistlover , there was a public outcry over the response of some security personnel, including policemen, to the growing number of extortions in the State.
Several people had previously criticized the Police for the Joint Task Force operatives’ dishonest actions in the State.
