There is a noticeable sense of unease in the state as the Imo state gubernatorial election draws near, as voters are approaching the poll with extreme caution.
Results from the state capital of Owerri reveal that while voting materials and INEC representatives showed up early at the several polling places, voters did not appear to be forthcoming.
Some locals who spoke with our correspondent attributed the event to Imo’s dire level of insecurity.
This could help to explain why some of the voting places that were visited between 8 and 9 am are still essentially deserted.
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) representatives came at Unit 012, Owerri Municipal, GRA at 8:23 a.m., ready to start voting.
However, similar to some other polling places, not a single potential voter was present to fulfill their civic duty.
Speaking with our correspondent in the city’s New Owerri neighborhood, a local known only as Kingsley observed that voters are approaching the election with caution.
“It is not the fault of the individuals that turn out to vote in the anticipated numbers. Caution is necessary given the state’s security situation, he said.
As the day wore on, Kingsley expressed optimism that “people will definitely come out to cast their votes” in spite of his criticism of the militarization of the country’s political system.
A woman identified as Chidiebere also spoke, expressing her resolve and willingness to vote at Owerri Municipal 2.
Despite her worries about the security situation, she is relieved that security personnel are there to handle any emergency.
