Isreal DMW Reminds Nigerians of Obasanjo’s 2004 Emergency Rule in Plateau State

Davido’s logistics manager, Isreal DMW, has drawn attention to a past state of emergency declaration, comparing it to President Bola Tinubu’s recent action in Rivers State.

The Parallel Between 2004 and 2024

Amid widespread reactions to Tinubu’s suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, Isreal DMW shared a front-page newspaper clipping from 2004, recalling a similar event under former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The 2004 headline highlighted how Obasanjo declared a state of emergency in Plateau State after deadly religious clashes, which reportedly led to the killing of over 600 Muslims in Yelwa, Plateau State.

Obasanjo’s Actions in Plateau State

Plateau State Governor Joshua Dariye was sacked for failing to curb the crisis.

The state legislature was suspended, losing all powers.

A retired army general, Chris Ali, was installed as interim governor for six months.

Is Tinubu’s Decision Justified?

Isreal DMW’s post seems to suggest that Tinubu’s decision is not unprecedented, urging Nigerians to reflect on past leadership actions.

However, the suspension of a sitting governor and deputy remains a controversial issue, with many questioning its constitutionality and implications for democracy.
