Media figure J.J. Omojuwa recounts an interaction with an individual who sought a loan of ₦300,000 to initiate a business venture following an extravagant wedding.

During their discussion, which Omojuwa later shared on the X platform, the man’s financial choices prompted Omojuwa to refuse the loan request.

In his post, Omojuwa inquired about the amount the man had expended on his wedding, which occurred the previous year. The man revealed that he had spent ₦1.7 million on the event, despite having a fixed annual income of ₦720,000.

“Someone comes to me, wants to loan ₦300k to set up his wife for a POS business. Ok. Sounds good. I ask, how much did it cost you to do your wedding last year? He said ₦1.7m. Ok. How much do you earn per year? ₦720k/year fixed. Cool. So you used your salary for over 2 years to do your wedding ceremony?” Omojuwa wrote.

When the man defended his expenditure by claiming it was a tradition in his village, Omojuwa retorted sharply, “The people that don’t have the money, didn’t do it, and are married, where are they buried?”

The man reportedly became quiet, and Omojuwa concluded his post with the observation, “You see, you are trying to punish me for your irresponsibility. Poverty is sometimes self-explanatory.”
