Just In: Deputy Senate President Ekweremadu in EFCC Custody

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, who was invited for questioning last week Tuesday is currently in EFCC custody.

Premium Times reported that the Deputy Senate President, who is facing multiple allegations of sharp practices in recent years, including claims that he forged Senate standing rules which led to the controversial election of principal officers in June 2015, arrived at the anti-graft agency’s office in Abuja between 9-10:00 a.m.

Ike Ekweremadu whose house was besieged by EFCC operatives few days ago, is also accused of owning multiple properties abroad, some allegedly purchased using shell firms and political associates fronting for him.

“He is currently at the interrogation room,” a source told the news platform. Another EFCC staff also said Mr Ekweremadu is with anti-graft detectives, but could not say when he would be released.

“We have some questions for him bordering on corruption,” a source said. “But we do not know yet when he would be released, we will know this by 5:00 p.m.”

The Deputy Senate president, Dr. Ike Ekweremadu, had tackled All Progressives Party, APC, over what he termed the use of anti-corruption agencies by the current administration to harass and intimidate the opposition party members. This came after the Federal Government asked the Federal High Court in Abuja, to freeze undeclared assets that were traced to the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

The properties reported totaled 22 which nine was said to be in Nigeria, two in London, eight in Dubai and three in the United States of America respectively. Ekweremmadu on the other hand had told his supporters not to panic over the ex-parte motion for assets forfeiture filed against him by the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property.

Speaking at the parties South-East zonal meeting, Ekweremadu asked his party members to remain steadfast and worry less.
