Several celebrities have voiced their support for suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as she takes her battle against Senate President Godswill Akpabio to an international platform, addressing a United Nations forum.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, the representative of Kogi Central, faced suspension on March 6 for six months following a heated exchange with Akpabio over Senate seating arrangements, which she claimed were intentionally designed to sideline her.

The situation escalated when she went on national television, alleging that Akpabio’s true intent was to retaliate against her for rejecting his alleged inappropriate advances.

Leveraging the international stage, Akpoti-Uduaghan spoke at the Women in Parliament session during the Inter-Parliamentary Union meeting in New York. She called for global attention on what she described as political persecution and intimidation.

“This is a clear case of political victimisation for speaking against corruption and gender-based violence. The United Nations Declaration defines sexual harassment as a form of gender violence.

“The Senate’s action is an assault on democracy. I was elected by my constituents to represent them, but powerful men have unilaterally silenced their voices by suspending me for six months,” she said in parts

A video of her speech quickly went viral, sparking renewed debates as critics and supporters clashed over her bold stance.

Amid the controversy, US-based Nigerian dancer and singer Korra Obidi, who has publicly shared her own experiences with harassment allegations against her former husband, Justin Dean, expressed solidarity with Akpoti-Uduaghan. She praised the senator’s courage and urged her to continue speaking out.

Similarly, singer Jaywon voiced his support, describing Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions as a triumph against suppression. As more prominent figures lent their voices to the issue, the conversation surrounding her suspension continued to gain momentum.
