Kwara governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, has announced his defection from the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
This was contained in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Dr. Muyideen Akorede.
Announcing his defection on Tuesday evening, minutes after Senate President Bukola Saraki announced his resignation from the APC, Abdulfatah wrote:
“Following due consultations and in response to calls by major stakeholders in the state, I have moved to the PDP because the APC can longer serve as a platform for achieving the aspirations and expectations of my people.”
However, Saraki has been silent on the party he is joining.
The development comes less than 24 hours after the national working committee of the APC dissolved the Kwara faction of the ruling party loyal to Saraki.
It had been earlier reported on various news platforms that Ahmed and two APC governors would defect from the ruling party.
The remaining two are Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Aminu Tambuwal. While Ortom has returned to PDP, Tambuwal is finalising his plans to pull out of APC.
All the politicians who defected were members of the PDP during the time of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.
