A Nigerian lady recently shared her distressing experience after lending her boyfriend ₦350,000—money she had saved for opening a shop—only for him to squander it on online gambling.
The emotional account was posted on TikTok, where it quickly gained widespread attention.
In her post, the woman explained that her boyfriend had persuaded her to lend him the money after she casually mentioned that she had saved it. She revealed that she had participated in a training program that equipped her with the skills to open a business, with the funding for the shop’s equipment being managed by her parents.
However, after handing over the money, the woman began to suspect that it had been used for gambling. She found a long betting slip and no signs of any substantial investment, which led her to the heartbreaking conclusion that her boyfriend had misused the funds.
Expressing her frustration, she stated: “I was supposed to get a shop by now. I gave him the money, and he went to use it to play a virtual game. ₦350,000! The money was a gift from a skill acquisition program to help me set up my business.”
“The organization empowers people by teaching them skills and providing funds. They gave my parents money for equipment, while I received money for the shop.”
“I told him I had some money, and he asked me to lend it to him. He never paid me back. He didn’t say what he used it for, but I suspected it after seeing a long betting slip. I couldn’t find anything valuable he spent the money on.”
As her post spread across the internet, numerous social media users flocked to the comments to express their views on the issue.
