Latest Couple In Town Narrowly Escapes Death In Lagos Third Mainland Bridge Accident

A tragic accident on Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge near Ilaje left 18 people injured on Saturday, including a newlywed couple returning from the Ikoyi Marriage Registry.

The crash involved a mini truck (AGL 22 YE) and a commercial LT bus (BFG 204 XF). According to Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the bus suffered brake failure at high speed and collided with the truck, which was moving slowly due to mechanical issues.

Among the victims were 16 passengers in the bus’s rear, including 11 women and 5 men, who sustained significant injuries. Two passengers in the front suffered severe fractures and were trapped in the wreckage before being rescued.

Emergency response teams, including LASTMA, the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASABUS), and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), swiftly transported the injured to medical facilities. While most victims were taken to the Lagos State Trauma and Emergency Centre, those with fractures received specialized care at Gbagada General Hospital.

LASTMA’s Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the victims and urged drivers to observe speed limits and maintain their vehicles properly, particularly during the festive season. He highlighted LASTMA’s ongoing road safety awareness efforts for commercial drivers.

Law enforcement officers from Alonge Police Station and Lagos State Task Force operatives secured the scene during rescue operations, ensuring a coordinated response to the incident.
