A Nigerian man who was locked up because of a ₦1,137,000 debt is about to be freed after an influencer raised money to settle the debt.
The story went viral on X (formerly Twitter) when @Wizarab10 shared a document that highlighted the man’s imprisonment due to the unpaid debt.
Wanting to assist, the influencer reached out to a lawyer to link up with the man behind bars. Just a few days later, they gave an update saying the debt was cleared.
He wrote: “Resolution has been reached, and the debt has been sorted. He will be out of prison on Thursday. Thanks to everyone for being a part of this.”
The attorney working on the case provided details about what caused the man to be imprisoned.
“I have spoken with his wife. He was working for his boss, selling items, but he used part of the money to cover his pregnant wife’s medical expenses. When she was due for delivery, he used the rest to settle the hospital bills,” he explained.
“They have a seven-month-old baby, and the boss insisted that until the debt was fully repaid, he wouldn’t drop the case. The man has been in prison since last year, and his case is set to be heard on Thursday in Ikorodu.”
“By God’s grace, we will ensure the debt is settled, and he will be released that day. If anyone is willing to support him or offer him a job after his release, please feel free to reach out.”
