Widespread protests have erupted in Rivers State as women take to the streets, demanding the return of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy. This demonstration comes just four days after President Bola Tinubu imposed a state of emergency in the state.
A viral video circulating on X (formerly Twitter) captures a large group of women holding placards in solidarity with Fubara, calling for his reinstatement as the legitimate governor.
The protests follow President Tinubu’s decision to suspend Governor Fubara and his deputy, appointing a sole administrator to govern the state. The suspension, announced on March 18, 2025, was reportedly due to escalating political tensions, which were said to have disrupted governance and threatened national stability.
Citing Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency, assuming special powers that led to the removal of Fubara, his deputy, and all state legislators. In their place, Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas was appointed as the sole administrator of Rivers State.
The decision has triggered divided opinions, with some critics condemning it as an infringement on democratic principles, while others argue it was necessary to restore stability and order in the state.
