Concerning the disappearance of the small intestine of the late Adebola Akin-Bright, the Lagos State House of Assembly has revealed its findings.
According to a statement released on Friday, the Noheem Adams-led special committee discovered that the doctor who operated on the boy was an inexperienced surgeon.
In order to request the arrest of Dr. Abayomi Baiyewu from the Obitoks Hospital in Lagos, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa directed the clerk to write to the Lagos State Police Command.
Dr. Baiyewu’s lack of a surgical license and reliance solely on his medical training were both revealed during the investigation.
Without conducting a medical examination and relying solely on information from an earlier hospital, the first surgery was carried out.
After issues and persistent complaints of stomach pain, Baiyewu himself performed a second surgery at Obitoks Hospital.
The missing portion of the boy’s intestine was discovered when he was later taken to LASUTH.
As advised, Baiyewu did not keep the removed body part for testing.
The House requested the hospital’s sealing while also offering condolences to the grieving family.
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria should be formally notified of your complaint against Dr. Baiyewu, and you should improve the oversight of hospitals and medical professionals.
The Speaker emphasized that private hospitals should routinely report their activities to the government and called for a review of current laws and the possibility of amending them.
The House had previously requested assistance from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for Akin-Bright’s international medical travel.
But tragically, Akin-Bright passed away on Tuesday.
