United States Senator, John McCain who died just over a week ago at 81, was buried on Sunday at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. A military fly-past was performed with the squadron one plane short, to symbolise the dead senator.
The late Senator John McCain was buried in a private ceremony attended by his family, friends and his classmates and the current midshipmen for a service at the school’s chapel. Mr McCain, who died on 25 August, aged 81, from the effects of brain cancer, was buried in a plot of land next to his Naval Academy classmate and lifelong friend Adm. Chuck Larson, who died of leukemia in 2014.“Chuck has his wingman back now,” the late admiral’s widow, Sarah Larson, told CNN.
One of the highlights of the event was his daughter, Meghan’s shade for President Donald Trump in her eulogy.
“The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again, because America was always great,” she said.
President Trump who had major personal and political differences with Mr McCain, had spent the weekend at his private golf course in Virginia, and did not attend the event which was attended by former U.S Presidents, George Bush and Barack Obama.
Former US Senator Joseph Lieberman, a friend and colleague of Mr McCain who also gave a eulogy at Saturday’s service, told CNN on Sunday:
“I say goodbye and my heart will be heavy. I’ll shed a tear and yet I’ll thank God that I knew a man like John McCain so well.”
The late McCain’s son Jack McCain, Gen. David Petraeus and Sen. Lindsey Graham also delivered remarks at the private ceremony. Graham said before the service that he wanted to talk about how “nobody loved a soldier more than John McCain, that I bear witness to his commitment to have their back, travel where they go, never let them be forgotten,” according to the news service.
