“My Fashion Style Choices Are Personal, Not Divine Instruction” – Tope Alabi

  • Tope Alabi, a gospel singer, has clarified that her decisions are personal and not influenced by God.
    • Alabi, a passionate about beauty and fashion, initially opted for a minimalist style due to financial constraints.
    • She clarified her church hair covering decision was personal, not a divine directive, and her jewelry use is often influenced by music video themes.

Renowned gospel singer Tope Alabi has responded to those who often question her fashion choices and personal style, clarifying that her decisions are entirely personal and not based on any divine revelation.

Speaking candidly, Alabi explained that while she has always appreciated beauty and fashion, financial limitations earlier in her career meant she had to embrace a more modest look. As her circumstances changed, so did her wardrobe, but always in alignment with her own taste and creative direction.

Addressing her consistent decision to cover her hair in church, she pointed out that it is a personal conviction rather than a spiritual mandate. She also commented on her modest use of jewelry, revealing that her appearance is typically adapted to match the message and tone of her music videos.

With her background in theater, Alabi emphasized her deep understanding of the role visual presentation plays in storytelling. She shared how, in the past, her limited resources led her to wear smaller earrings and simpler outfits. Today, however, her clothing and accessories are chosen with intention—tailored to suit each project and its thematic essence.

Through her response, Tope Alabi affirmed her belief that faith and fashion can coexist—and that individuality should never be mistaken for spiritual error.

She said in a livestream: “I love beauty and fashion but I don’t have the money for it. God has never once told me never to wear earrings, necklaces or wigs, never.

“The hair that I cover in church was never under God’s direction, I did that under my own initiative, it was intentional. I told myself that anywhere I want to minister, I would cover my hair unless I’m called to sing impromptu when I’m wearing my wig.

“If you see me in any video where I’m not wearing earrings, just know it is because I decided not to because the meaning of the song does not warrant earrings. I’m a theater practitioner to the core so I know what look fits each song.

“When I want to shoot my videos I know how to dress for each video. Back then people used to see me eating small earrings, they just didn’t know that I only wore smaller earrings because I couldn’t afford big ones. I also considered the theme of the video shoot and the location. Do suffering people wear earrings?”
