Well-known actress Stella Damasus shared that her last name was originally Ojukwu before it was changed.
She talked about this in a video interview with media host Ebuka Obi Uchendu.
She explained that the name change happened during the Nigerian civil war.
She mentioned that back then, it was believed to be associated with the Biafran general, Ojukwu, and people would often go after anyone they thought was connected to him.
“My family name was Ojukwu but it was changed to Damasus during the civil war to avoid being attacked by Nigerian Soldiers…,” she said in part.

@weightloss_abuja: “So many people changed their surnames during the war. It was for survival. Gladly, she’s setting the record straight”
@dds_express_services: “Ikwerre man will soon come to say his name us eze okechukwu but he is not igbo.”
@mr_abara: “Not surprised. This is the same reason many Igbo people in Delta, Rivers, and Edo still vehemently deny being Igbo. I guess it’s a generational trauma stuff.”
@segun_adegoke: “So Stella Damascus is originally an Igbo woman”
