Rema, a well-known Nigerian singer, mentioned that his popular song ‘Calm Down’ helped create the new Afrobeats category in some international awards.
During his appearance on ‘The Breakfast Club’, he emphasized that he stands alongside Afrobeats stars like Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy.
“I don’t want to feel like an Afrobeats Messiah. Sometimes I can’t wait for the OGs to say it but since no one is saying it, I might have to say it myself,” he said.
“Respect to the OGs but yeah, I am one of the Big 4… Something as little as a major award shows creating an Afrobeats category because the success of my song has already opened gates.”
Recall that last year, the MTV Video Music Awards introduced a new category for Best Afrobeats Song. Rema’s ‘Calm Down Remix’ featuring Selena Gomez won the first award in this category.

In another clip from his chat with Breakfast Club, Rema discussed how he felt after earning his first fifty million naira.
Rema talked about the challenges he faced on the streets. He mentioned that he wasn’t worried after earning his first big paycheck as a rising singer.
Instead of spending it on himself, he bought a car for his mom and a musical instrument for a church.
“When I made my first 50 million I was not fret. I got my mum a car and I bought instrument for the church,” Rema said.
The singer remembered the tough times he faced after the loss of his father and older brother.
