N35k Minimum Wage: NLC/TUC Gives Fresh Ultimatum to State Governors

Organized labor has given the 36 governors of the country a two-week ultimatum to start talks with its members regarding the N35,000 wage award for workers in their respective states.

As per The Punch, labor is requesting that the states engage in negotiations with their workers in compliance with the memorandum of understanding that exists between the federal government, the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

On Tuesday, October 17, the NLC and the TUC delivered the governors an ultimatum, asking them to expedite the required procedures and review implementation in order to lessen the impact of the removal of fuel subsidies on members.

The governors must start the implementation as soon as possible because they stated that the deadline for paying wage awards would expire in two weeks.

On October 1, workers will receive N35,000 until the new national minimum wage is enacted into law, according to an agreement that the national TUC and NLC reached with the federal government.

Additionally, a six-month wage award for federal workers was agreed upon by the union and the government, and governors were urged to enact similar measures to support workers.

After threatening to go on a nationwide walkout on October 3, organized labor was able to call off the action thanks to the wage award agreement.
