The Akwa Ibom State Police Command nabbed Gabriel Ekpiri for reportedly selling his nine-year-old son for N400,000 (Four Hundred Thousand Naira).
The suspect, a jobless resident of Ekit Itam Akpan Obong in Itu Local Government Area, confessed to the act and blamed it on the devil’s and economic hardship.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko Macdon, on Tuesday, Gabriel Ekpiri was arrested due to the quick involvement of a patrol unit.
The cops were on a normal patrol when they discovered the terrible deed and immediately intervened.
The PPRO said;
”The Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi has condemned the action, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable, the PPRO informed.
“The Commissioner of Police has condemned the action of one Gabriel Okon Ekpiri of Ekit Itam Akpan Obong in Itu Local Government Area who sold his nine-year-old son for N400,000.”
The episode sent shockwaves across the town, leaving neighbors angry and disappointed by a parent’s behavior toward their own child.
The police have initiated an extensive investigation into the incident in order to determine every detail of the incident and ensure that all people involved face the full force of the law.
The rescued child has been placed in the hands of child welfare officials while legal proceedings continue.
