The National Association of Nigerian Students NANS, has called for a revision to the Student Loan Act.

Gistlover recalls that the student loan bill was enacted by President Bola Tinubu in June.

The bill, sponsored by Femi Gbajabiamila, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, was created to address the financial barriers young Nigerians face in accessing higher-quality education.

Usman Barambu, the president of NANS, advocated for the inclusion of student representation on the board while speaking at the legislative summit on student loans and access to higher education that was organized by the house ad hoc committee in Abuja on Thursday.

In addition, he demanded that polytechnics and colleges of education be added to the board in place of the National University Commission (NUC), which was previously captured.

“Student loans are for us yet there is no student representation on the board. The board only captured NUC sidelining the polytechnic and colleges of education, which should all be included for fairness and equity.

“Most students will not be able to find their ground financially two years after graduation, therefore, the payment method should be revised to four to five years.

“Forgiveness should also be considered in cases of death.”
