NDDC Distributes Palliatives To Bayelsa Flood Victims

The Niger Delta Development Commission has provided relief items to each of the eight local government districts of Bayelsa State that are vulnerable to flooding

NDDC Director of Corporate Affairs Pius Ughakpoteni issued a statement in Port Harcourt on Thursday, citing the commission’s explanation that the gesture was part of its efforts to lessen the effects of floods on the state’s citizens.

Speaking at the distribution of the relief supplies in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director of the NDDC, explained that this was the interventionist agency’s response to the challenges facing the people and a means of mitigating the effects of the recurring flooding in many communities throughout the state.

Under the leadership of Godknows Alamieyeseigha, the Director of the Bayelsa State Office of the Commission, and Dr. Week Doodei, the Director of the NDDC Director, Procurement, Ogbuku stated that the palliatives were given to the representatives of the several communities to assist them in addressing their issues.

He reiterated the NDDC’s dedication to easing the difficulties the Niger Delta region’s residents face, saying,

“We share in the pains of the victims of the flooding in Bayelsa State. We realise that they have lost a lot which cannot be replaced.

“We assure you that the NDDC has very good programmes for the people of the Niger Delta region and as many people as possible will benefit from the distribution of the palliatives.”

He added, “The NDDC is not only about building roads and physical infrastructure. We also intervene in social services.

“We will monitor the distribution of these palliatives to ensure that they get to the affected areas. This intervention will take place in all the NDDC mandate states because the Commission was set up to address situations such as this.”

The head of the NDDC warned that stockpiling and diversion of the commodities would not be allowed and pleaded with the leaders of the beneficiary communities to make sure that the items reached the most disadvantaged individuals in their communities.

Following an inspection of the relief supplies loaded into numerous vehicles, the NDDC boss’s representatives gave the community leaders instructions to make sure the various supplies were transported to the various local government districts and localities where they would be delivered.
