Nigerian parents have stirred up discussion online by throwing a lavish surprise birthday party for their daughter at her school.
A video that went viral shows the girl in tears as her parents surprised her with a cake, a money bouquet, a heartfelt note, and a trumpeter to celebrate the special day.
Her mother, a baker, posted the touching moment on TikTok via her handle @helescakes, showing how the surprise was organized.
She wrote, “My daughter was going to school, and she demanded our Fresh2go cake with her favorite flavors to share with her classmates, as the previous day was her birthday and they didn’t go to school.
“Her dad and I, along with two of her siblings, decided to deliver the cake to her in style. 😍 She forgot her mum is the Queen of surprises! 🥹😄
My family and I really want to appreciate everyone that celebrated our daughter on her birthday.”
The video quickly gained attention online, leading to mixed feedback from social media users. While some praised the parents for making their daughter feel special, others were critical of the extravagant display, arguing it could create stress for other students whose families might not be able to afford such celebrations.

@maxvayshia: “Terrible parenting. Money bouquet for a secondary school girl and you’d wonder why many ladies have that as a standard for gifting by a man. There is a serious parenting problem in Nigeria and this values are passed down to the next generation. Not everyone who is married has sense and marriage doesn’t automatically make you wise or better-knowing than one who is single.”
@JimRezzz: “She can never forget this in her whole life. No boy can impress her with type of birthday surprise, cause her dad has already showed her what it is to be loved.”
@MUMSYTIARASTORE: “This is lovely. Dem con cut onions for her 😂😂😂😂. If she no keep the money, For public school,Na tiff Dem go tiff am 😂.”
@DeYork02: ‘Can someone tell me what’s beautiful about this? “Do the right thing at the right time”. What did other children learn from this rubbish? Some of them will go home with this feeling of not being loved by their parents. Nigeria should know how to make preference. This is absolutely not right. It can subject other students into trauma.”
