Niger Coup Leaders announce Alliance With Burkina Faso, Mali Against ECOWAS

The leaders of the Niger Republic coup have formally proclaimed a military alliance with Mali and Burkina Faso, two neighboring nations.

General Abdourahamane Tchiani led the coup in Niger that overthrew President Mohammed Bazoum’s democratically elected administration on July 26, 2023, according to Gistlover.

Although ECOWAS and other regional and international organizations have called for an immediate return to democratic rule, the soldiers have so far disregarded these calls and instead proposed a three-year transitional plan that ECOWAS has since rejected.

Following an invasion threat from the Economic Communities of West African States (ECOWAS), the military junta has recently formed an alliance with Burkina Faso and Mali.

In the event that military action is taken against the junta in Niger, the agreement enables Mali and Burkina Faso to offer military assistance to Niger. A comparable agreement has already been reached between Mali and Burkina Faso.

In accordance with the agreement, the three nations must also cooperate to protect their borders and fight terrorist organizations that operate near their borders.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has stated that using force is still a possibility for bringing democracy to the Niger Republic.

Omar Touray, the president of the ECOWAS Commission, made this statement on Friday during a press conference regarding the political situation in Niger and the military junta’s refusal to transfer power to deposed president Mohammed Bazoum.

He promised that the military junta would not abandon the people of Niger.
