A special court martial convened by the Nigerian Army found Major General Umar Mohammed, the former Group Managing Director of Nigerian Army Properties Limited, guilty of 14 of 18 count charges that were all in violation of service laws.
Seven other major generals and a brigadier general served as members of the court martial, which was presided over by Major General Kames Myam.
The charges included, among others, theft, forgery, conspiracy, theft, and unauthorized diversion of army property.
All of the charges were subject to service sanctions.
One of the fees included the collection of $1.045,400 from shipping companies who used the Nigerian Army Jetty at Marina No. 6, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Additionally, Major General UM Mohammed was found guilty of stealing $430,800 that had been paid into the Nigerian Army’s domiciliary account at Unity Bank in Abuja for the use of the Nigerian Army Jetty in Marina VI, Lagos.
Additionally, Major Gen Mohammed was found responsible for withdrawing and seizing N74 million out of the N75 million that was paid for a property owned by the Nigerian Army in Ikoyi, Lagos.
However, the general was cleared of charges that he sold military property worth N200 million in Lagos and stole another N750 million from the N2.5 billion obtained from banks and subscribers for an army housing estate in Asokoro, Abuja.
He was also cleared of charges related to fabricating a deed of agreement document in order to seize another army property in Lagos.
The Special Court Martial, which is presided over by Major General Kames Myam and consists of seven other Major Generals, a Brigadier General, and a Judge Advocate, is scheduled to read out the sentences for the defendants on Tuesday of the following week.
Major General UM Mohammed was wheeled into the courtroom during the court martial; however, the court’s president, Major General Myan, stated that the accused had undergone all required medical examinations, all of which had shown that he was healthy enough to stand trial.
