The Obi of Onitsha and Chairman of Anambra State traditional rulers council , Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, has raised alarm on the level of marginalisation Ndigbo has faced in Nigeria with only five states whereas other zones have between six and seven states.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of 6th Anambra State traditional rulers seminar themed, ‘Political Power Zoning for Peaceful Elections and All-inclusive Democracy in Anambra State’, Achebe pointed out that even the Nigerian constitution marginalised Ndigbo with the states structure.
The Obi said he was shocked that even the 2017 Budget that was just signed into law Ndigbo are marginalised, wondering why the constitutional conference would not be implemented to resolve all the problems of Nigeria and marginalisation.
He reminded that whichever option Ndigbo takes in advancing its course in Nigeria, there is a consequence adding that whether, it would be restructuring or outright separation, there is a consequence.
He lamented that Ndigbo has nobody yet speaking for them like the Yorubas or the Hausas. He decried a situation where former Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme, would speak and he would be insulted by our people.
‘’Who is speaking for Ndigbo now? We don’t have such a person like Hausa and Yoruba. We must have a speaker and we don’t need to insult people to be heard. We must not be rude to our elders to make our point”, he said.
Igwe Achebe thanked Governor Willie Obiano for granting certificates to 24 Royal Fathers newly elected to minimise the controversies in some communities while assuring more efforts would be put in place to restore total peace in most communities.
