Gift Onyinye Ola, a Nigerian lawyer, has advised women to opt for cesarean sections (C-sections) rather than enduring the pain of natural childbirth.

In a series of posts on her Facebook page, Ola criticized the perception among many African women that enduring labor pain is a sign of strength. She argued that suffering through childbirth should not be a measure of a woman’s resilience or worth. According to her, societal pressure often pushes women to choose vaginal birth, even when safer medical alternatives are available.

Ola emphasized that no divine mandate requires women to give birth painfully. She challenged the common belief that women must deliver “like the Hebrew women,” a phrase often interpreted to mean a quick and pain-free birth. She pointed out that religious texts do not guarantee painless childbirth and urged women to make informed medical choices rather than subjecting themselves to unnecessary pain.

She further noted that advancements in medical science have made C-sections a safe and viable option for many women. While acknowledging that every childbirth experience is different, she encouraged women to prioritize their health and well-being over societal expectations.

Her stance has sparked mixed reactions, with some agreeing with her perspective and others insisting that vaginal birth remains the best option. Despite the debate, Ola remains firm in her belief that no woman should feel obligated to endure labor pain if safer alternatives are available.

“God never promised we would give birth like the Hebrew woman. There’s no such thing. Take care of yourself, eat the right food, go to antennal, Do CS or anything medically possible to reduce the trauma,” she wrote in a Facebook post on Monday.”
