The Governor of Benue State Samuel Ortom, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the state of Nigeria. He called the Nigerian rulers sycophants and mediocres.
Ortom said the leaders, including himself, have failed the citizenry because nothing is going on in every aspect of the country, while speaking to journalists shortly after the Church service conducted at the Chapel of Grace, Government House, Makurdi, to celebrate this year’s Independence Day.
“There is nothing to celebrate, that’s why here in Benue state, we choose to celebrate God for giving us life. We cannot celebrate anything; is it the economy close to N600 per dollar?. Is it what?” he said.
“What are we celebrating as a people? We leaders have failed. We leaders have failed this country. Sycophants, mediocres are the ones ruling. They have taken over. Corruption has taken over this country and in every sphere of life, nothing is happening
“But, we need to celebrate God for keeping us alive, maybe tomorrow we can have a better Nigeria. But for now, I won’t deceive you, there is nothing to celebrate,” he added.
Earlier in his remarks at the church service, the governor decried the state’s high level of insecurity, revealing that over 100 security personnel have died since 2017 while attempting to provide protection for the people of the state.
He praised the state’s security forces for the recent arrest of a notorious outlaw known as “Azonto,” while emphasizing the need of his return to the state to face justice.
Ortom also lamented the predicament of over a million displaced people in various camps across the state, urging Nigerians to continue to demand a country that ensures justice and fairness for everyone, claiming that the country was still far from the founding fathers’ goals.
