Veteran comedian Okey Bakassi has voiced his concerns over the growing authoritarian tendencies of Nigerian politicians.

In a recent post, Bakassi criticized the political elite for acting as though they are above the law, stating that many now behave like “gods” who cannot be questioned. He lamented the increasing trend of citizens being arrested simply for expressing dissent or criticizing the government.

The comedian warned that this unchecked behavior could push the country to a dangerous tipping point. According to him, if the suppression continues, it may pave the way for drastic measures like a military intervention — at which point politicians may hypocritically call on citizens to rise in defense of democracy.

Okey Bakassi said, “Nigeria politicians are now behaving like they’re gods and untouchable. If you talk, they will lock and arrest you. This is how they will continue in this reckless until the military decides to do a coup and take over the country.”

His remarks have sparked heated reactions on social media, with many Nigerians sharing similar frustrations about the shrinking space for free speech.

In other news, Popular TikTok influencers Habeeb Hamzat, also known as Peller, and Amadou Elizabeth Aminata, widely recognized as Jarvis or Jadrolita, have spoken out amid mounting criticism and calls for their cancellation on social media.

The backlash stems from their reaction to the viral 30 Days Rant Challenge on TikTok. In a widely circulated live video, Peller criticized Nigerians participating in the challenge, urging them to take their grievances elsewhere instead of expressing their frustrations on the platform.

Peller in the viral video said,

“Don’t rant on TikTok. Don’t rant here oh. You are wicked. You want to ruin our source of livelihood… If you want to rant, go to the market. Leave TikTok alone.

In a video, Jarvis, Peller’s partner, boasted about their ability to buy anything despite the ongoing economic struggles.

This statement sparked outrage among many Nigerians, particularly on social media platform X, with some users demanding action against Peller.
