Nigerian Senate Suspends Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for Six Months Over

The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following her allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The decision was made on Thursday, after the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions reviewed the case and found multiple violations of Senate rules.

Reasons for the Suspension

Presenting the committee’s findings, Senator Imasuen Neda Bernards, the chairman, explained that the investigation involved testimonies and opportunities for Akpoti-Uduaghan to defend her claims.

Among the key issues cited:

  • She allegedly caused a rowdy session by refusing to sit in her designated seat.
  • She engaged in a heated verbal exchange during proceedings.
  • Senator Raphael Adeyemi Adaramodu, who had petitioned against her, testified regarding her conduct.

Senators’ Reactions

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim Folorunsho stressed the importance of upholding Senate rules, arguing that no individual should be above the law.

Similarly, Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno remarked that only in the “animal kingdom” do rules not exist.

However, Minority Leader Abba Moro pleaded for a reduced three-month suspension, arguing that it would be enough for her to reflect on her actions.

Despite the appeal, Senate President Akpabio upheld the six-month suspension after a voice vote.

Consequences of the Suspension

  • Akpoti-Uduaghan must return all National Assembly properties.
  • Her security details will be withdrawn.
  • Her office will be sealed to prevent access.

Akpabio’s Personal Connection to Akpoti-Uduaghan

In a surprising revelation, Senate President Akpabio disclosed that he had attended Akpoti-Uduaghan’s wedding and even stayed in her home in 2020, adding a personal dimension to the controversy.

The suspension has further fueled political tension, with supporters and critics debating the fairness of the decision.
