Nigerians Seeks Justice for Bumpa Co-Founder Adetunji Opayele

  • Nigerian social media users are expressing their demand for justice for Adetunji Opayele, co-founder and CTO of Bumpa, who tragically died in a car accident.
    • The hashtag “Sign the Petition” is trending on X as users gather for an online petition demanding accountability.

Nigerians across social media platforms are rallying for justice following the tragic death of Adetunji Opayele, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of retail tech startup Bumpa, who lost his life in a motorbike accident.

A growing wave of online support has emerged under the hashtag #SignThePetition, urging authorities to take action. The campaign is anchored by a petition on Change.org, created by a user named “Teejay Legacy,” which has already amassed over 7,000 signatures directed at the Lagos State Government.

According to a report by Techpoint Africa, the incident occurred on the night of March 4, 2025, around 10:20 p.m. on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Victoria Island, Lagos. Opayele, also known as Teejay, was returning from the gym on his power bike when he was allegedly hit by a car driven by Biola Adams-Odutayo.

Eyewitnesses and the petition claim that Adams-Odutayo, who was merging onto the expressway, failed to yield to oncoming traffic, leading to the fatal collision. Despite the fact that Opayele wore full safety gear, he was knocked unconscious at the scene.

Bystanders reported that Adams-Odutayo, a health professional and Head of Health at a top insurance brokerage, remained in her car and did not render assistance. A friend of hers allegedly remarked that she didn’t want blood staining the car.

Shockingly, while Opayele lay critically injured, Adams-Odutayo was said to have stayed on a phone call for over 30 minutes rather than offering help. Opayele was later transported to a hospital by good Samaritans but was pronounced dead in the early hours of March 5.

Following the incident, Adams-Odutayo reportedly visited the same hospital, requested a drip, claimed she was in shock, and later attempted to leave. She was detained briefly and granted bail after paying ₦1 million.

Public outrage has grown over what many believe to be an inadequate legal response. Petitioners are calling for Adams-Odutayo to be charged with manslaughter instead of reckless driving. They are also urging state authorities and prominent figures, including the Osun State Governor, to intervene and ensure justice is served.

Kelvin Umechukwu, Bumpa’s co-founder, has lent his voice to the campaign, stating, “Though his presence will be missed, we commit to keeping Teejay’s legacy alive.”
