Hannah Reuben, a Nigerian Army corporal well-known for her silver medal at the Commonwealth Games and her All African Games triumph, won gold in the women’s 76 kg division in the 36th World Military Wrestling Championship, which is now taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Friday.
Reuben thanked the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) for their assistance and praised Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, and other service commanders for their preparation, emphasizing the critical role their support played in her achievement.
“I utilised this championship as a platform to gear up for next year’s African Games and the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris,” said Reuben, emphasising her readiness for these major competitions.
Hannah expressed hope that additional wrestlers would qualify for the Olympics, as Odunayo Adekuoroye is the only wrestler now eligible.
In other results, eight more Nigerian wrestlers are slated to fight on Saturday, and Esther Ojolaide won a silver medal in the women’s 57kg division.
