After spending 48 years in Canada, Nigerian academic Professor Amos Mabayomije Ishola Awodiya has returned to Nigeria with no wife, children, or personal fortune.
Now 80 years old and set to turn 81 in June, Professor Awodiya shared his emotional life journey in an interview with cleric Agbala Gabriel. Their conversation, lasting over 40 minutes, was later shared on Facebook with a caption emphasizing his situation: “He spent 48 years in Canada with NOTHING. HE IS BACK HOME WITH NOTHING. NO WIFE. NO CHILD. NO HOUSE. He needs our HELP.”
During the discussion, the professor, who claims to be the world’s first specialist in heuristic education, reflected on his career and experiences. He recalled returning to Nigeria briefly in 1995 when he was appointed as a minister and served as a senior special adviser to Brigadier Tunde Idiagbon on secret intelligence matters.
An accomplished author and lecturer, Professor Awodiya also spoke about his efforts to publish the Nigerian Encyclopedia, a handwritten 2,000-page book. However, he disclosed that he was defrauded of 81 million naira in the process, which marked the beginning of his financial struggles.
He mentioned that he had been married at one point, but his wife sadly passed away without having children.
Throughout the interview, he and the cleric conversed mostly in Yoruba, showcasing his deep-rooted connection to his heritage despite spending decades abroad.
His story has since gained widespread attention online, with many people expressing sympathy and offering to assist him in his time of need.
