The Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) has threatened to use military force against the military junta in the Niger Republic, which has alarmed the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF). If this happens, the Northern region of Nigeria will suffer dearly.
The military junta in the Niger Republic was given a deadline by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to give up control and reinstate the democratically elected President Mohamed Basoum, who had been overthrown a few weeks earlier.
According to Gistlover, this deadline has been reached, raising concerns. In a recent interview with Channels Television, Yerima Shettima, president of the AYCF, warned that Nigeria, particularly the northern region, would suffer severely if ECOWAS decided to use military force to remove the military junta.
He forbade the African Union and the regional organization headed by President Bola Tinubu from using force against the coup plotters.
The forum has also urged the coup leaders to start the transitional plan right away in order to return the nation to democratic rule within a year, noting that military rule is no longer popular in Africa.
Shettima urged President Tinubu and ECOWAS to use diplomacy and communication to resolve the political impasse in the nation of West Africa.
