NURTW President, Baruwa Speaks As Police Grant Him Freedom after been arrested

Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa, president of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has responded to his detention by Nigeria Police Force personnel.

According to a previous Gistlover story, Baruwa, the union’s General Secretary Anthony Asogwa Chukudi, National Trustee Olayi Odion, and Principal Assistant Secretary Abdulrasak Yemi were all detained by police.

The NURTW representatives were held at Abuja’s Wuse Zone 3 Division. Following claimed intentions by some organizations to hold a protest at the National Secretariat of the union, located at Garki 2, Abuja, the police are said to have invited Baruwa and a former Lagos State chairman of the union, Tajudeen Agbede, for an investigation on Friday, August 11.

However, Baruwa urged union members to uphold the law and avoid behavior that could disturb the calm in their area on Wednesday while speaking to press in Abuja.

He advised state-level members to uphold the law and conduct themselves normally without any molestation, noting that the union was striving to find a solution to the problem.

He claimed that NURTW had maintained its peace throughout the years and would not permit anything to compromise its record of accomplishments.

Baruwa praised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by Comrade Joe Ajaero, for acting quickly to resolve the problem.

We want to use this opportunity to thank the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and our members at the state councils and branches for their assistance and support on this matter, he added.

“We’re urging all of our members to go about their everyday business in a calm, peaceful, and law-abiding manner. We want to reassure you that the issue is being dealt with and will be rectified soon.

He claimed to have gotten his freedom back and was no longer being held by the police. Baruwa warned NURTW members against making divisive remarks that could harm the union.

He consequently pleaded with the state chairmen and members to put the union’s interest ahead of their own, and work as a team to advance
