OAP Dotun has criticized South African artist Tyla regarding her acceptance speech following her victory in the Best Afrobeats Award at the MTV VMAs 2024.

Tyla made history as the first African female artist to receive the Best Afrobeats Award during the ceremony held at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on the evening of September 11.

She achieved a significant milestone as both the first female African artist and the first South African artist to be honored with a VMA.

Tyla triumphed over notable competitors including Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, Tems, and Usher with Pheelz, securing the award with her track, ‘Water.’

In her acceptance speech, Tyla referred to her achievement as ‘just so special but also bittersweet,’ emphasizing her representation of ‘Amapiano.’

She remarked, “African music is so diverse,” highlighting that it encompasses more than just Afrobeats.

In response to her speech, OAP Dotun expressed that Tyla’s win for the Best Afrobeats Song at the 2024 VMA was a ‘miss.’

He suggested that Tyla could have chosen to return the award or reject the nomination rather than accept it while asserting her affiliation with ‘Amapiano.’

Dotun contended that the South African singer accepted an accolade that does not align with her musical genre.
