Olabode Olawuyi, the zookeeper, was fatally mauled by a nine-year-old hungry lion at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife Zoological Park.
The tragic event happened on Monday, February 19. The terrifying aftermath was documented in a video that has now gone viral.
The OAU Zoological Garden was overseen by seasoned Veterinary Technologist Olabode Olawuyi, who has over ten years of expertise.
The horrific video shows Olawuyi lying injured and unconscious on the ground following the lion’s mauling.
Colleagues who are shocked can be heard expressing their displeasure and promising that the offending lion will not get away with it.
One staff member acts decisively as the tension in the video increases by taking out a gun and pointing it at the lion that mauled Olawuyi.
A gunshot is heard, striking the lion in the midst of the high tension.
The gunshot wound causes the animal to start limping before it collapses and dies from its wounds.
The University’s public relations officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, issued a statement verifying the unfortunate event and offering sympathies to Olawuyi’s family.
