ODION IGHALO CHILDHOOD/EARLY LIFE & FAMILY
Ighalo was born on the 16th of June 1989, in Ajegunle, a ghetto area in Lagos State, known for harbouring several musical as well as football talents. His father, Paul Ighalo was unemployed while Ighalo was a young boy. His mother, Martin Ighalo, worked as a petty trader, selling provisions as well as soft drinks.
Ighalo was raised in a household with limited resources. Ighalo and his siblings’ mother occasionally had to market sachet water on the streets of Lagos in order to make ends meet. His mother gave her little support to her son, but his father specifically discouraged him from playing football when they found out about his passion in the game. Ighalo’s mother gave him money so he could buy football boots and pay for his own transportation to games.
Ighalo, a stubborn football player, disobeyed his father. Ighalo and his friends occasionally had to hide from the police and drug dealers during football games to avoid getting hit by errant shots.
His father disapproved of his decision to play football mostly for this reason. Ighalo’s mother would shield him from his father’s reprimands even after he disobeyed his commands.
Ighalo left school to concentrate on football, and he played on the Macarena, a local football field in Ajegunle that had hosted numerous of the country’s greatest players, including Kanu Nwankwo. The moment Ighalo’s Argentinean-born FIFA agent Marcelo Houseman recognized his potential and brought him to Norway for a trial marked a turning point in his career.
