The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, is performing the traditional Umato rites today (Saturday), which shows the end of the planting season and the beginning of the kingdom’s harvest season.
The rites are part of the Ofala Festival, also known as the New Yam Festival, celebrated annually in the city.
According to a statement by Globacom, this is sponsoring the festival.
The Umato rites which will take place at the Ime Obi (inside palace), will involve the traditional ruler feting palace chiefs and other witnesses of the rites with corn meal as a symbolic gesture.
