On September 10 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, the Super Eagles will take on Sao Tome and Principe in their final AFCON 2023 qualifying game.
Nigeria has earned a spot in the competition scheduled to take place in Cote d’Ivoire in January 2024 by currently finishing first in group A, ahead of Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone.
While Super Eagles players wait to learn who will serve as their coach during the AFCON, it’s important to note that there are more than enough players who can combine into a strong team that can compete with any African team.
The Nigerian team, in particular, has a wealth of talents at the central forward position; it will be interesting to see who makes it to the campaign and starting XI in January 2024.
Presently dominating their respective teams are Victor Osimhen, Gift Oban, Victor Boniface, and Taiwo Awoniyi. Osimhen had a stellar season for the Italian team last year, so Napoli will be hoping he continues in this vein. Osimhen has scored three goals for the Nezaruuzians so far this season in three games. There have now been three goals scored.
Another sensation in Europe, Gift Oban has caught the attention of top managers who may decide to sign him away from Belgian club Gent. In just nine games, the 21-year-old has scored six outstanding goals for the team, and he doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
After scoring thirteen goals for Nottingham Forest the previous season, Taiwo Awoniyi is currently enjoying life once more. The former Union Berlin player has been a strong playmaker for the English team this season, scoring three goals in four games.
When Victor Boniface won Player of the Week and Goal of the Week at Bayern Leverkusen the previous week, he was in every news article. The 22-year-old has had a strong week, scoring five goals in four games for the German team.
Before AFCON 2023, it remains to be seen if these four can keep up their shooting form as well as their muscles and bones. If any of these four are available, the coach may have a difficult time choosing a striker for the Super Eagles because they deserve one with a goal-scoring ability.
