Victor Osimhen, a Nigerian international striker, has been accused by the Napoli dressing room for the Italian club’s early elimination from the Champions League.
Some team members think that the striker is solely responsible for the loss, as he was mostly isolated during the second-leg encounter in Catalonia.
Napoli were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League when Fermin Lopez, Joao Cancelo, and Roberto Lewandowski scored to help the Spanish club win on aggregate.
BusinessDay stated that the squad tied 1-1 at the Diego Maradona Stadium in the first leg due to a late goal from Osimhen.
Osimhen only managed one shot throughout the course of 90 minutes and won one of the 10 duels he competed.
This, among other reasons, has prompted squad members to assume that the Nigerian is being spoiled after being named the team’s highest-paid player, according to Pulse Sports.
According to reports from Italian daily Il Mattino and Calcio Napoli 1926, the Napoli dressing room is dissatisfied with the club’s management of the African star, whom they think has been placed on a pedestal.
The local newspaper added that, while it is reasonable that champions be treated with great respect and freedom, as has been the case throughout the game’s history, these rights should be revoked if their performance on the field falls short.
Calcio Napoli 1926 wrote: “Historically, champions are granted greater freedom, as long as they prove decisive in times of need. In some ways, he is an annoying but also divisive leader.”
“He also appears capable of disturbing the climate of the dressing room, as when he decided (with the manager and the club) not to even go to the bench with Genoa, after his return from the African Cup of Nations.” “This is also why Kvara seemed dissatisfied, disheartened, without motivation.”
