Nigeria says a heartbreaking goodbye to one of its most beloved music legends, Onyeka Onwenu, better known as the “Elegant Stallion,” who was put to rest in a truly affecting ceremony in Lagos.
The Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju saw the closing chapter of her illustrious life, as friends, relatives, and admirers came to honour the legacy of a lady whose voice had reached far beyond the boundaries of music.
The burial ceremony, which included passionate tributes and heartfelt eulogies, depicted a life lived with elegance and purpose.
Videos of the sombre rituals inundated social media, depicting heartbreaking moments at the church and the subsequent private burial at a tranquil mausoleum in Ikoyi.

Onwenu’s legacy is a tapestry weaved with threads of many abilities and interests. She was not just a great artist with several successes, but also a respected broadcaster, a talented actor, a brave politician, and an unwavering campaigner.
Her unexpected death on July 30, 2024, at Reddington Hospital in Ikeja, after a terrible fall during a ceremony honouring Dr. Stella Okoli, Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, sent shockwaves throughout the country and beyond.
She leaves behind an unfillable gap, but she is survived by two loyal kids who, like the rest of us, will carry the torch of her exceptional spirit for the rest of their lives.
