Prominent Nigerian political figure, Peter Obi, has earned widespread praise following his decision to sponsor the education of Quadri Yusuf Alabi, a teenager who recently gained public attention after being freed from Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
Yusuf’s release stirred emotional reactions across the country and was brought to light by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong. In a Facebook update, Effiong revealed that the court had ordered the Nigerian Police to compensate Yusuf with ₦100 million and issue a public apology for his wrongful imprisonment.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Peter Obi shared his experience meeting Yusuf, describing the encounter as deeply moving.
In his words, Obi stated:
“Today, I had the opportunity to meet with Quadri Yusuf Alabi, the young boy whose story moved us all. After enduring unjust and illegal incarceration, he is finally free.
Despite all he has been through, his only dream is to return to school and complete his education—and I will make sure he gets it.
His determination is not just inspiring; it is a call to action, and I am committed to ensuring that he gets the education he desires and deserves.
As we strive to build a Nigeria where fairness and integrity prevail, we cannot afford to allow such acts of criminality to go unpunished.”
Obi’s gesture has been hailed as a powerful reminder of the impact of empathy and justice in leadership.
