Portugal has extended the validity period of expired visas and residence permits for foreign nationals until June 30th, 2025.

Holders can now remain in, exit, and re-enter the nation without facing legal ramifications.

The extension applies to all essential documents that expire on or after February 22nd, 2020, and assures that foreign nationals can continue their stay in Portugal without interruption, according to the DAAD Scholarship.

Documents that expired on or after February 22nd, 2020 will be valid until mid-2025.  This covers residence permits, visas, and other legal documentation.  Foreign nationals will be permitted to live, work, and move inside the country without interruption.

All Portuguese public agencies will acknowledge the validity of these documents for legal purposes.

The extent of the extension

The extension applies to numerous types of visa and resident permit holders.  This includes:

  • Residence Permits (AR) include CPLP, as well as short-term, temporary, and residence visas.
  • Other important legal stay documents

These documents are now valid until June 30th, 2025, allowing the holders to keep their legal status in Portugal.

Recognition of extended documents

All public and private bodies in Portugal must accept the extended papers.  This comprises a variety of institutions, such as:

  • The Employment and Vocational Training Institute (IEFP)
  • The Social Security Institute (ISS
  • Portuguese Taxation Authority (AT)
  • The National Health Service (SNS)
  • Local authorities (city and parish councils)
  • Banks Employers

These entities will acknowledge the documents’ legitimacy for all legal, professional, and social purposes.

Rights of Foreign Nationals in Portugal

The new rule allows foreign nationals to legally stay in Portugal.  It also allows people to leave and return to the nation by presenting their extended documents as proof of legal status.  This decision aims to alleviate the uncertainties that many foreign residents have experienced as a result of backlogs and delays caused by the pandemic.

The extension assures that people can continue living in Portugal without fear of losing their legal status.

Limitations to Schengen travel

The extension is only applicable within Portugal’s borders; it does not effect travel to other Schengen Area nations.  Foreign nationals on extended visas must still meet the entry requirements of other Schengen states, according to reports.

When traveling between Portugal and the rest of the EU, the regular Schengen Borders Code will apply.

Reports indicate that foreign nationals who experienced problems during the pandemic have appreciated the new approach.
