Presumed winner of the June 12 Presidential election, MKO Abiola, has been conferred with the GCFR title by President Buhari.
It was gathered that the family members of the presumed winner of the June 12th 1993 election, MKO Abiola and frontline lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi and many others have arrived Abuja for the investiture of June 12 as the official Democracy day and confinement of national honors of their deceased loved ones. Also among the guests were MKO Abiola’s daughter, Hafsat Abiola-Costello, Gani Fawehinmi’s first son, Mohammed and and first daughter Basirat.
One of the highlight of the event was President Buhari’s apology on behalf of all Nigerians, to the family of the late Chief Moshood Abiola for the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election which he won.
Buhari said his decision to revisit the annulled election was not an attempt to open an old wound, but to put right what has wrongly been done. He said it was clear that late politician was already winning the election when the government of the day inexplicably canceled it. He said Nigerians will no longer tolerate such traversal of justice. This came after late MKO Abiola’s daughter, Tundun disclosed that former military Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, IBB, apologized to her family for the annulment of the June 12 presidential election by his junta. Speaking on Channels Television, Tundun disclosed that the former military leader has actually apologized to the Abiola family. According to Tundun, “IBB has actually apologized to the family. Personally, he has. Now IBB has said in public but stopped short of an apology in public that his life was threatened.
“He says he was told by certain factors that my father must never become Commander in Chief of this country. He was afraid. He has actually admitted that publicly.”
