Former presidential aide, Pastor Reno Omokri, remains adamant in his call for disciplinary action against NYSC member Ushie Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, following her viral criticism of President Bola Tinubu over the country’s economic crisis.
After her outspoken remarks, Raye alleged that NYSC officials began threatening her and summoned her to appear before her Local Government Inspector in Lagos on Monday, March 17.
Amid growing concerns that she could face expulsion or other severe penalties, activist Omoyele Sowore accompanied her to the NYSC office. His presence intensified public fears that Raye might be unfairly targeted.
In response, Nigerians took to social media to express solidarity with Raye, condemning what they perceived as intimidation tactics by the authorities.
As discussions on social media took an ethnic turn, with some alleging that Raye’s ordeal was influenced by tribal discrimination, Omokri rejected such claims.
To support his argument, he recalled Davido’s NYSC controversy in 2018 under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. At the time, the NYSC sanctioned Davido for absconding from camp, stripped him of his uniform, and terminated his participation in the Batch ‘B’ Stream II program in Lagos.
Omokri emphasized that despite Davido’s powerful Southwest connections, no tribal bias was alleged, and no political figures intervened in his case.
Omokri insisted that the same principle must apply to Raye, stressing that her situation is about adhering to NYSC rules, not tribal discrimination.
He wrote:
“This is not about politics or ethnicity. Under President Buhari, the NYSC disciplined music star Davido for flouting its rule.
The people of the Southwest did not accuse the NYSC of tribalism, and the PDP did not accuse President Buhari of witch-hunting an opposition politician.
There must be a rule of law in Nigeria rather than rule by sentiments.”
Public Reaction
Omokri’s stance has sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting his call for disciplinary action, while others insist that Raye is being unfairly targeted for expressing her frustration over the state of the nation.
