Reps Suspends Plenary session Over Labour Strike

In order to give the leadership and members of the House of Representatives time to consider how to put an end to the ongoing organized labor strike, the plenary session has been adjourned midway.

The House of Representatives’ Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, submitted a resolution of urgent public interest during Wednesday’s resumed plenary, and it was quickly considered and adopted. This led to the adjournment.

Under the auspices of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), Kalu called on the leadership of the House to convene with its Senate counterpart and, following that, the leadership of organized labor to seek a peaceful resolution to the industrial action.

A number of MPs who participated in the motion’s discussion bemoaned the suffering the strike is causing the people of Nigeria and demanded that the standoff be broken immediately.

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen declared prior to the adjournment that the House and Senate leadership would convene and that each member should make personal efforts to rectify the unstable situation.

As a result, the House was adjourned to the following legislative day, Thursday, and all of the matters on the Order Paper that were set for consideration were suspended.
