Each member of the House of Representatives will soon receive utility Prado SUVs worth N130 million Gistlover Learnt
The National Assembly has acquired and will soon distribute the vehicles, according to a statement made late Sunday night in Abuja by the parliament’s spokesman, Rotimi Akin.
The legislator claimed that the initiative was in line with current procurement laws and added that it had been typical in earlier assemblies. He claimed that the distribution was related to vehicles used by lawmakers to carry out their oversight responsibilities while serving on standing committees, and that they were not gifts for individual lawmakers.
“These vehicles will remain the National Assembly’s property for the duration of the 10th assembly, which runs from 2023 to 2027.
The lawmaker noted that lawmakers might have the opportunity to buy the vehicles before they become their property if the government’s current assets deboarding policy was still in effect in 2027.
Akin emphasized the value of transportation in enhancing lawmakers’ ability to carry out their duties, particularly in relation to oversight responsibilities across the nation.
No matter where Nigerian citizens may be, he said, the goal should be to ensure that government interventions, programs, and policies are implemented effectively. He also called attention to the legislature’s budget, which has been steadily declining over the past ten years and now accounts for 0.5 percent of the federal budget.
The lawmaker urged participants to prioritize cost reduction in pertinent areas while assisting lawmakers in carrying out their responsibilities in an efficient and moral manner.
He claimed that the vehicles are tools for the job, not status symbols, and are there to help elected officials perform their duties of representation, constituent outreach, and oversight more effectively.
